Scatophagus argus - Green Spotted Scat

Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus, 1766)

Deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish with a steep forehead and distinctive spotted pattern. Juveniles often show dark vertical bars or large blotches that break into spots as they mature. Color ranges from greenish-silver to yellowish or reddish (ruby morph). Attains up to about 38 cm (15 in).

Biology: Omnivorous. Juveniles feed more on zooplankton; adults consume algae, plant matter, small invertebrates, and detritus. Forms schools. Spines can inflict painful wounds.

Aquarium notes: Popular but grows large and needs spacious tanks. Best kept in brackish to full marine conditions as adults. Hardy, active, and voracious eaters that benefit from a varied diet including substantial plant material. Peaceful with similarly sized tankmates but may outcompete smaller fish for food.
